So what is Rolfing®?

Rolfing® — also known as Rolfing® Structural Integration (SI) — is a holistic hands-on therapy that releases tightness and restriction held in Fascia, a type of connective tissue in your body. Rolfing® SI can dramatically relief pain, alter your posture and structure, potentially resolve discomfort, and release tension.

Fascia: The Key to Unlocking Your Pain

What Makes Rolfing® Different?

Massage Therapy vs. Rolfing®

Rolfing® and massage both involve hands-on manipulation of soft tissue but with different goals. The purpose of massage therapy is relaxation and release of tension. Rolfing® aims to provide a long-term overall improvement in the body’s alignment and functioning by addressing the organ of Posture, known as Fascia. The benefits of receiving a Rolfing® session remain long after the work is received.

Chiropractic vs. Rolfing®

Rolfing® and Chiropractic both seek to align the body through hands-on manipulation, but only Rolfing® lengthens and balances the Fascia systematically to remove restrictions and correct imbalances. Chiropractic focuses primarily on the alignment of bones and joints by using high velocity to move the bone to its proper position. If the Fascia isn't addressed, bones can become misaligned again.

Physical Therapy vs. Rolfing®

Rolfing® and Physical Therapy both include evaluation, assessment and treatment. Physical Therapy is an active part of treatment that includes exercise, strengthening or activating under-active muscles. Some physical therapists may even provide limited tissue work where pain occurs. Rolfing® primarily consists of tissue work with some active participation by the client on the table. Movement during Rolfing® sessions helps to integrate the tissue work for greater results.

Marcel's work is one of a kind! Since becoming a mom, I've had increasing wrist pain for 2 years, and couldn't get rid of it. I also have an impinged arm nerve problem for about 20 years and have been sent away by many docs ('just learn how to live with it'). A friend recommended Marcel. From the first session on the therapy felt spot on. Marcel has an amazing ability to tune into the body, and slowly decipher what's going on in the deeper levels. Where my shoulder and arm felt locked and tight, they feel now so much more at ease and 'workable' (I'm able to do exercises myself that keep the arm in very good shape). I'm also able to use my wrist pain-free. I highly recommend Rolfing and Marcel!

Frequently Asked Questions

For whom is Rolfing appropriate and helpful?
For whom is Rolfing appropriate and helpful?
Rolfing can help people of all ages. Its goal is to improve body structure, posture, and movement. This is why it is possible to apply Rolfing for all types of discomfort that have their origins in these areas.

It can treat…
  • Back pain
  • Neck tensions
  • Headaches
  • Problems with the hips, in the knees, or with the feet.

After accidents and operations Rolfing can help dissolve relieving postures and help those affected gain freer movement. Athletes who want to achieve more efficient movement sequences benefit from Rolfing as well. This is also true for people who want to expand their body awareness and possibilities of expression, such as musicians, dancers, and actors. Additionally, Rolfing is also suitable for anyone who wants to make lasting improvements to their health and wellbeing.
How many sessions do I need?
This depends on your personal goals. To release specific tensions at least temporarily, 1 to 3 sessions can suffice. However, if you want a lasting change in your overall wellbeing, the European Rolfing Association e.V. (ERA) recommends the classic 10-session series that Dr. Ida Rolf developed, in which each session builds upon the progress achieved in the previous one.
Does Rolfing® hurt?
Rolfing has a reputation of being painful, but Rolfing does not have to hurt. Each client will react to pressure differently. The amount of pressure used will always be tailored to your comfort level. I pay close attention to the comfort of my clients during each session. The well being of my clients is paramount in my practice.
What is special about Rolfing®?
Rolfing® is holistic, process oriented body work. Dr. Ida Rolf called her work “Structural Integration” and developed a series of ten sessions that build upon one another systematically.

The Rolfer always takes the entire body, as well as structural and functional relationships into account. During 10 sessions (10-session series) the entire fascia network of the body is addressed – with the goal of aligning it ideally in relation to gravity.

Rolfing differs from other methods because it takes gravity and its importance for our wellbeing into account. Ida Rolf recognized early on that gravity plays an essential role as an organizing element for body structure, movement coordination, special perception, and even human expression.
Are the benefits of Rolfing sessions long-lasting?
If you ask individual clients about Rolfing, it depends, among other aspects, on how well they can engage with their own body and the changes. Apart from the manual work with the fascia, Rolfing is also about refining the client’s body awareness and replacing unhealthy movement patterns through healthier ones. The newly refined body awareness allows clients to quickly identify and correct returning old patterns, even after the series have been completed.
